Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed on the last Monday in May. It is a day dedicated to honoring and remembering the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. The history of Memorial Day dates back to the aftermath of the American Civil War.
The Civil War, which took place from 1861 to 1865, was one of the deadliest conflicts in American history, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of soldiers. In the years following the war, communities across the United States began holding tributes and ceremonies to honor the fallen soldiers and decorate their graves.
The exact origins of Memorial Day are uncertain, as several communities claim to be the birthplace of the holiday. One of the earliest Memorial Day observances was held on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina. Freed slaves, along with U.S. Colored Troops and other black residents, organized a ceremony to properly bury Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp. They cleaned up the camp, landscaped the burial ground, and built an archway with the inscription “Martyrs of the Race Course.” This event is considered by some as the first Memorial Day.
