Volleyball was created in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a physical education instructor in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He wanted to create a less strenuous alternative to basketball that could be played by older individuals. Initially called “Mintonette,” the game was played indoors with a net and borrowed elements from basketball, tennis, handball, and baseball.
In the early years, the rules of volleyball were fluid and evolved as different variations were played in various YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) centers. In 1896, the first official volleyball game was played at Springfield College, formerly the International YMCA Training School.
Volleyball made its Olympic debut at the Summer Games in Tokyo in 1964. Initially, only indoor volleyball was included, but beach volleyball was added as an Olympic event in Atlanta 1996.
Over time, several rule changes were introduced to improve the game. The introduction of rally scoring in 1999, where a point is awarded on every rally regardless of which team served, added to the excitement of the sport.
