The Great Wall of China, also known as the Great Wall, is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials, generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China to protect the Chinese states and empires against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe.
Construction on the Great Wall began over 2,000 years ago during the Warring States Period (476-221 BCE) and continued through the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE), with some sections being rebuilt and renovated during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912 CE). The total length of the Great Wall is estimated to be around 21,000 kilometers (13,000 miles), although not all sections are connected.
The Great Wall consists of many different sections, some of which are open to tourists and others that are inaccessible or in ruins. Some of the most popular sections for tourists include the Badaling, Mutianyu, and Jinshanling sections, which offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape and a glimpse into China’s rich history and culture.
Today, the Great Wall is recognized as one of the world’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of China’s ancient civilization and culture. It has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and continues to attract millions of visitors from around the world each year.
